Siobhán’s Swim Story
My name is Siobhán and I have been a member of Aura De Paul since February of this year. I took swimming lessons last autumn as I needed to engage in a low impact sport following spinal surgeries. I hated the water and the very idea of putting my face into it filled me with fear but my fitness level and core strength were so low I felt I had no option but to give it a go, so literally I took a deep breath and went for it! I shocked myself at much I enjoyed it and looked forward to my weekly lessons. I mastered the basics in a couple of months but a width of the pool was about as much as I could manage before I was puffing and panting. I needed to practice to begin to build my fitness and a friend recommended Aura De Paul to me. I liked the fact that the pool was not very deep and 20m seemed like a distance I might someday manage.
From my very first visit to the pool in February I loved the place. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the entire complex is spotless and it is clear that safety is a priority for all members of the team. I soon became a regular visitor to the pool and was so proud of myself when I finally managed to swim that elusive length! Slowly but surely I found myself managing more and more lengths.
In July, I decided to take part in the Aura Swim Challenge around the Aura sites in Leinster. I enjoy the challenge as it is non- competitive and it keeps me focused on increasing my stamina bit by bit. I now swim between 70 and 100 lengths at least five times a week. So far I have completed over 7,000 lengths which is 65 miles and have approximately 55 miles to do to get me back to De Paul. If I go away my swim bag comes with me and I find a pool wherever I go. I have totally amazed myself at what I have achieved in 10 short months. I’m 53 years old and probably the fittest I’ve been since I was in my 20’s. Exercising regularly also encourages me to eat a healthy balanced diet and along with learning to swim I managed to lose 38 pounds!
