Building Your Mental Fitness During Lockdown
In today’s busy world, and even more so during a pandemic, it is imperative that we constantly practise mindfulness and work on our mental fitness. Many of us focus carefully on bettering our physique or image and forget to exercise a healthy mind too. In a busy work day, it may be the last thing you find the opportunity to do, but working on your mental fitness will improve your wellbeing and overall health hugely. During this time of being on lockdown, it is an excellent opportunity to begin or further your practise of mindfulness or working on mental fitness. Where do you begin?
The first step would be to work on your breathing. Did you know that by breathing in through your nose to a count of three and out your mouth to a count of six, it’s possible to clear your bloodstream of a stress hormone called cortisol- in as little as one minute. Give it a try. Secondly, turn off your social media feed. The constant bombardment of information from social media can heighten anxiety, try to turn them off for most of the day. At the same time, stay healthy and active. Remain active by going for a walk, stretching or practising meditation can allow you to clear your mind.
Knowing the basic facts; If COVID-19 heightens your anxiety, a solution is to educate yourself on COVID-19, you can avoid some of the stress and anxiety that results from misunderstanding or misinformation. Diseases can make anyone sick regardless of your race or ethnicity. There are simple things you can do to keep yourself healthy e.g. safe hygiene and stay home when you are sick or have symptoms. Finally, Focusing on the positive. While this is easier said than done, make a conscious choice to approach each day with a renewed, positive outlook. Don’t forget to stay connected and stay positive! Pandemics like these do come to an end, and we will get through these unprecedented times.
